FINDING SHADE

from £400.00

When you’re the world’s tallest animal sometimes finding shade can be quite the task. My team and I were travelling through the wider Masai mara in our truck, we had been up since 4am that morning and were on the hunt for a good acacia tree to take refuge from the mid-day heat. We crossed a dry riverbed and rounded a corner up into an open plain, here we noticed a single tree in the distance, “jackpot!”. As we got closer, we could see that this spot was already taken by a small group of giraffe. However, due to the angle we had approached it was hard to tell how many giraffe were seeking shelter. I asked Peter our driver to take a wider loop to the right, as we moved forward the giraffe appeared to multiply before our very eyes! At this point though the furthest left individual was stood up and facing the tree itself. For me symmetry in nature is incredibly powerful and I could sense an opportunity in front of me… the waiting began! There were nonother trees in the area, so as the sun climbed high above our heads, the heat rose all around us. One hour… two hours… three hours… the sound of people uncomfortably shifting in the car, the sighing of hot crew members… how much longer could we wait? Then… finally! The giraffe on the left turned and sat down to create one of the most magical compositions I have ever seen.
