THROUGH THICK AND THIN
After spending 3 weeks on foot in Hallo Bay Alaska, we were beginning to understand the intimate relationships amongst the brown bears that frequented the sedge grass meadows at that time of year. Bears tend to be solitary animals, unless it’s a mother with her cubs, or a female tolerating a male’s presence for potential mating. Outside of these two scenarios I’ve found bears can be very protective of their personal space. However, on this particular trip we noticed group of juveniles, some five individuals who banded together to form a gang… the motley crew. These young bears were not of breeding age, nor were they under the protection of mum anymore. They kept an eye out for one another through thick and thin, roaming around the sedge meadow trying to stay out of trouble. This was a moment where a young female who had been sat staring at us was approached by a young male from behind. As he approached her, he nuzzled her ear as if to whisper a secret. The humans in front of this female were no longer interesting and they ran off, playing and sparing with one another.
