NATURAL SYMMETRY

from £400.00

On their journey to adulthood young bears have many things to learn in order to survive. Most brown bears leave their mothers side when they are around two or three years old. But often you will find these juveniles band together in small groups rather than go out on their own straight away. During first period of independence, they have a lot to learn, one of which is how to fight. The ability to defend yourself is integral for both their own safety and the safety of their future cubs. To do this the young bears spar with one another and although it may look rough they are not injuring one another… quite the opposite. They are clearly enjoying themselves. This pair were chasing one another for over an hour, and during this time I watched and witnessed almost puppy like love between the two. This image catches a beautiful moment where the bears are in symmetrical embrace, as if in a dance. The combination of intimacy, symmetry, simplicity, power and playfulness of this image reflects everything about that wild moment in the Alaskan wilderness.
